Vintage Sterling Silver Kokopelli figure earrings available for sale. These uniquely Southwest earrings are perfect for any lover of vintage North American Sterling Silver jewelry.
Among many of the Southwest Native American Tribes, including the Hopi and Zuni, the Kokopelli figure represents the "God of Fertility". The modern Kokopelli depiction is a figure with a humpback, a headdress of feathers, and a music pipe. The God is generally associated with childbirth, crop growth, and the rains. He is also considered a trickster and a musician. In a rare twist the term "Kokopelli" also refers to real people, generally traders, who traveled between the dispersed settlements. These individuals would dress colorfully, have a large pack full of trade goods, giving them the impression of a humpback, and a pipe they played music on to inform the settlement of their approach and peaceful intentions. They were masters of language, and though jokers and entertainers, they were well respected traders.
These earrings weigh a combined 8 grams as a pair or 4 grams each. The figures are approximately 1 1/2 of an inch tall and slightly under 3/4 of an inch wide. The earrings hang almost 2 inches including the enclosed fasteners.
The earrings are both stamped "925" which stands for 92.5%, that being the silver purity content of Sterling Silver. The earrings also test well for Sterling. We were not able to identify a maker's mark or hallmark on these very intricate and beautiful pieces.
