It is difficult to try and think of a single word to describe this beautiful Carol Felley Storyteller Pueblo Sterling Silver cuff bracelet and earrings set. These Pueblo Storytellers are arguably the most sought after and top of the line. To really understand why it is difficult to come up with just one word to describe these pieces you have to understand who Carol Felley is, and what she represents within the Southwest jewelry community.
Carol Felley was born in New York. She graduated from Carnegie Mellon University after studying the fine arts. She was not born on one of the reservations. She is not, to my knowledge, a member of any Native American tribe by birth. However, she has chosen to embrace the American Southwest and moved to New Mexico after graduation. Her pieces show an outsiders take on the traditional Native American motifs. This is what makes these particular pieces absolutely spectacular. It is her artistic vision of the Native American storytellers.
Traditional storytellers, and we have a superb example of one with our Gene Nataan piece, are monolithic and hieroglyphic. They remind one of the religious paintings from the Middle Ages. This piece is almost realistic with artistic license, like art from the Renaissance. It is textured and the scene stands out from the cuff and earrings. The lines and shadows make the pieces come to life. Almost like you are looking at the pueblo on a clear moonlit night. When the reflected light from the pale moon masks color and all we see are black, white, and shades of grey.
Starting like most artists she produced artisanal items at first. Then with success she moved into more of a trading house production and increased the number of pieces she was bringing into the market. Exposing many people to Southwest style jewelry for the first time.
Carol Felley did not just mimic the Native American style. Trying to pass of her Anglo work as Native American as hundreds, likely thousands, of artists have done. Rather she took her love for the Native American art and combined it with her own artistic vision. Creating her own distinct style. That is why her flagship pieces, such as these, command the price they do. That is why it is so difficult to describe these pieces in one word. Except maybe for complex.
