My soap isn't soap!?!?

I have some bad news for you. Chances are the "soap" you use on a daily basis isn't really soap. It is actually a chemical compound created to mimic the action of the soap molecule. Theses chemical concoctions have more ingredients than you can shake a finger at in a minute. In a quest for a healthier and happier life why wouldn't you want to take the best care of your largest organ, the epidermis, more commonly known as your skin?

Soap, in its purest form, as produced by Good Karma Products Incorporated, is made by combining fats or oils and an alkali, such as lye. When triglycerides in fat/oil react with the base, they are converted into soap and glycerol. This is called alkaline hydrolysis of esters. Since this reaction leads to the formation of soap, it is called the saponification process.

The soap molecule is something special. Soap allows insoluble particles to become soluble in water. This allows them to be rinsed away. For example: greasy items are  insoluble in water, but when soap is added to the mixture, the greasy items solubilizes into the water. The insoluble molecules become associated inside micelles, tiny spheres formed from soap molecules with polar hyrdrophilic (water-attracting) groups on the outside and encasing a lipophilic (fat-attracting) pocket, which shields the oil/fat molecules from the water making it soluble. Anything that is soluble will be washed away with the water. Basically the soap molecule captures dirt and grime and allows it to be washed away from the body.

Detergents mimic this activity but do so by adding more chemicals into the mix. Which means more chances for something to have an adverse reaction with your skin.

The FDA provides the below information regarding soap in our marketplaces today:

"Today there are very few true soaps on the market. Most body cleansers, both liquid and solid, are actually synthetic detergent products...Some of these detergent products are actually marketed as "soap" but are not true soap according to the regulatory definition of the word."(http://www.fda.gov/Cosmetics/ProductsIngredients/Products/ucm115449.htm)
